Designed with you in mind: With Sensi, Emerson puts contractors first.

Sensi Smart Thermostat from Emerson

Jane Molina and Joy Williams are anomalies in their field.

The sisters, who own Williams Heating & Cooling in St. Louis, Mo., say that in some ways they were atypical choices to run a local HVAC company. They’re minorities in a small field. They’re women in a male-dominated one. They’d both moved out of the St. Louis area to pursue other dreams.

But in other ways, they were the perfect choice. After all, they’d grown up around HVAC, joining their father James Williams on service calls since he founded the company. So when James retired, his daughters took the plunge.

Since then, the sisters say they’re committed to upholding the same standard of service their father gave their tight-knit community. And that meant partnering with a brand they could trust: Emerson, and their Sensi line of Wi-Fi Thermostats.

“When we go into a customer’s house and we say, ‘We’re going to give you this Emerson Sensi Thermostat,’ they’re going to say, ‘I know the Emerson name,’” Joy Williams said. “It just validates us in the field.”

The newest member of the Sensi family, the Sensi Touch Wi-Fi Thermostat, comes equipped with a built-in level, easy-click terminals and a terminal light for quicker install. Justin Morgan, Williams Heating & Cooling’s lead HVAC-installer, said contractor-friendly features like these make the thermostat a technician favorite.

“The installation process of the Sensi Thermostat is about as easy as it gets,” he said. “You really don’t need a whole lot of tools. Use the built-in level and push-in tabs, and it’s installed.”

This efficient install means that small business owners like Joy Williams and Jane Molina can get their contractors in and out of homes faster—letting them lower their bottom lines.

“When you’re a smaller family company, every minute counts,” Molina said. “The Sensi Thermostat makes our installers’ life easier, which makes our lives easier, which makes the customers’ life easier. It’s full-circle.”

Ted Konechne, the VP of HVAC Support at L&S Mechanical, knows efficiency matters in big business too.

Konechne, who is based out of Richardson, TX, is part of a company with a steadily-growing HVAC division. L&S Mechanical deals mostly in new construction homes, and Konechne said that constant demand means time is of the essence.

“There’s lots of stuff to do on a startup,” he said. “There are a lot of things that we have to do to develop and design an air conditioning system for a brand-new home. Getting it done means getting in there and getting the control up so that you can power the system.”

But it’s not enough to just get a thermostat on the wall, Konechne says. The real heavy lifting comes in the way complex controls live behind a sleek, user-friendly design.

“When users walk up and all of that effort is culminated in that one control, it’s seamless, modern, updated,” Konechne said. “It puts a nice cherry on top of a well done-design.”

He attributes the smart technology behind the Sensi Touch to Emerson’s heritage and history of innovation.

“There are not a lot of controls companies who understand the management of temperature, the sensing ability and have that science built into that control,” Konechne said. “You put the control on the wall and you know it’s going to handle the work that needs to be done.”

For Jane Molina and Joy Williams, the dependability behind the Sensi line is personal.

The sisters say they’ve installed the thermostats in the homes of friends and neighbors (and even their mother). Some of the appeal, they say, lies in the ability to remotely control home temperatures from the Sensi app, putting control at their homeowners’ fingertips. This energy saving feature, along with geofencing and flexible scheduling, let homeowners save money—and make sure that their comfort is key.

Morgan says its touches like these that make Williams Heating & Cooling’s customers fans of Sensi—plus, Sensi thermostats are eligible for utility rebates that could save homeowners up to $100.

“Homeowners love having that access and ability to get on their phone and just put their thermostat to whatever temperature they want it to be,” he said “You’re connected, turn it up or down and you don’t have to worry about anything.”

Homeowners have been so pleased that Williams Heating & Cooling isn’t getting problem-related callbacks.

“We’ve had great homeowner feedback and literally have zero problems,” Morgan said. “But that’s what you expect from Emerson.”

As they continue to keep their business thriving, the sisters at Williams Heating & Cooling say they’ll continue to partner with Emerson—just as their father did.

“Emerson cares about the end-user and about us as contractors,” Joy Williams said. “Because if you don’t, there’s no way that you can sustain in the contracting world. With Sensi, they’ve created the Wi-Fi thermostat for the contractor that’s going to work for the homeowner.”
