RICHARDSON, TX — There would be no repeat run to the championship game this season for the Louisiana College women’s basketball team as they were eliminated in the quarterfinal round of the American Southwest Conference Tournament. The Wildcats played a strong second half but the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor made their 18 trips to the free throw line in the half count in the 81-71 victory. LC ends the season with a 14-11 overall record.

The Wildcats and Cru were evenly matched through the first 10 minutes of play, as evidenced by the close score throughout the quarter. LC went ahead 10-6 after back-to-back baskets from Kourtney McGhee and Taylor Payne. A pair of free throws at the 1:43 mark of the first gave UMHB the lead, but Rachel Johnson answered with two free shots of her own a few seconds later to put the Widcats back on top. LC held the 15-14 advantage after the first quarter of play.

A 9-1 run to start the second quarter by UMHB created some space between the two teams for the first time in the game as the Cru went ahead 23-16 with 7:32 left in the half. The lead eventually made its way to 11 points by the midway point of the half before the Wildcats began to claw their way closer. An eight-foot, transition jumper from Janae Smith and two free throws from McGhee following a technical foul made it a five-point game with 1:41 remaining. The Cru scored the final five points of the quarter on a pair of layups and free throw to take the 40-30 lead into the break.

The Wildcats have made multiple come back bids in the second halves of games this season, and Thursday’s affair would be no different as LC worked their way back from the 10-point deficit. RyDeja McQuarn started the half with a long ball on the first shot of the half to start the comeback. Brooke Jones found position under the basket for two layups and Kourtney McGhee drained a 3-pointer all in the first two and a half minutes of the third to get the Wildcats within a bucket at 42-40. Two would be as close as the Wildcats would get the rest of the quarter as the Cru began to find answers for each of LC’s points. The Wildcats still trailed heading into the fourth quarter but only by three at 59-56.

The Wildcats continued to battle into the fourth quarter and got to within one point on two separate occasions, the second of which after a Jones layup with 3:42 left in the game. The Cru did not make a field goal the rest of the game, but went 12-of-14 from the free throw line to pull away from the Wildcats. Combined with LC’s 1-for-10 finish to the game the Cru were able to take the 81-71 win to advance to the semi-final game on Friday evening.

Seniors Brooke Jones and Kourtney McGhee combined to score all 15 points for the Wildcats in the fourth quarter. Both players finished the game with a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds each. McGhee also added six assists to her effort in her final game as a Louisiana College Wildcat. Taylor Payne had six points and five rebounds in the game as well.

The Wildcats finish the season with a 14-11 overall record and 10-8 mark in ASC play.
